Why Freiburg?
To make your decision for Freiburg easier, we have listed 10 reasons that speak for studying at the Albert Ludwig University and living in Freiburg: 10 Reasons to Choose the University of Freiburg
However, because it is also difficult to assess yourself and in order to bring you closer to the opinions of your fellow students, we have collected a few opinions of former incomings for you below:
Marika, Italien:
"It’s a city where living is really simple, everything is at walking distance and it’s constituted almost exclusively by students. On the Cultural side, Uni Freiburg has a great history and is by fact one of the oldest universities in Germany."
Hanna, Schweden:
"It is a lovely city. Great surroundings and nice people."
Rachel, USA:
"Freiburg is a big city with lots of different opportunities for exchange students. The University here is well organized and is very welcoming to exchange students, which is very helpful and makes you feel at home. Personally, Freiburg reminds me a lot of Madison, my hometown. I really enjoy living here."
Application and admission
As exchange student
- ERASMUS exchange program: If there is an Erasmus agreement between your home university and our university, you can easily apply for a one or two semester study stay with us. An overview of the Erasmus partners in economics can be found here. Please contact the person responsible for Erasmus at your university regarding the allocation of places. If they nominate you, send us the corresponding application for admission. Important information about admission can be found here.
- Faculty Exchange Program with the Business School at the University of Wisconsin, Madison: The application and admission of nominated students of the Business School takes place on site after your arrival in Freiburg. You will be personally supervised by us.
- Exchange programs of the International Office of the University: As a nominated student of a partner university of the University of Freiburg you will find all information about admission and enrollment here.
Within the framework of short-term studies (without a degree)
If no student exchange has been agreed upon between your home university and the University of Freiburg, you can apply for one or two semesters as a so-called "short-term student" under certain conditions. Information on admission requirements can be found here.
In full-time studies with degree
- Full-time study program "B.Sc. in Volkswirtschaftslehre" (standard period of study 3 years): This degree program is currently not subject to admission restrictions. Anyone who meets the formal criteria for university study in Germany can apply for a place. The application deadline is July 15 of each year. Information on the application and admission process can be found here. In addition to the formal admission criteria, a very good command of the German language and a good knowledge of mathematics are required for successful study of the economics major. Since English-language specialist literature is also used, a good knowledge of English is also helpful.
- Full-time study "Diplom-Volkswirtschaftslehre": This degree program is being phased out. New enrollments are no longer possible.
- Full-time study "M.A. in Economics and Politics", "M.A. in Finance", "M.A. in Internet Economics" (standard period of study 2 years): The English-language master's programs are aimed at bachelor's degree graduates in economics from all over the world. The number of participants is limited, and the application deadline is May 15 each year. Information on the courses and application modalities can be found here.

Erasmus Overview
- Before your stay:
The application procedures for the ERASMUS+ Exchange Program at the University of Freiburg are available on the website of our interdisciplinary EU-Office.
After your successful nomination, the EU-Office will contact you and provide you with further information.
Before starting your stay abroad you and your departmental coordinator of your home institution need to prepare a list of courses you wish to attend. This so-called Learning Agreement ensures the allowance of your achievements as well.
Therefore, please review the course outline that fits your study program. In each course outline we provide you with all necessary information regarding the number of ECTS points and course content. Afterwards please refer to our course catalogue on the HISinOne website and check, if the courses were taught in the last respective semester. (The course catalogue for the upcoming semester is usually confirmed and available only a few weeks before the semester starts).
There are 2 ways to search for courses in HISinOne:
1) Using this link: This is the most convenient way to search for courses, since you can simply enter the course title in the search field. Please pay attention to the selected semester below the search field.
2) Using this link:
- Go to "Wirtschafts- und Verhaltenswissenschaftliche Fakultät" and then "Institut für Wirtschaftswissenschaften".
- For undergraduate studies select "Grundständige Studiengänge". For graduate studies select "Master of Science".
- Choose your field of study (Business Administration = Betriebswirtschaftslehre, Economics = Volkswirtschaftslehre)
- Please note that only courses with a "+" are offered.
For most of the courses (lectures), you do not have to register in advance. However, if you wish to take seminars, you have to apply for participation at the respective professorial chair. The application process differs between the chairs, therefore please check the respective websites 2-4 weeks before the semester starts for announcements. Unfortunately, we can not accept a seminar in your "Learning Agreement before Mobility" without a confirmation of your successful application. But no worries: You can change your "Learning Agreement during Mobility" during the first weeks at university and add or delete courses/seminars.

Guide: "How to register for exams via HISinOne
- The following guide should help you with registering for exams via the platform HISinOne. (Each picture can be displayed enlarged by clicking on the picture)
- Log in to the system with your student account.
- Go to "Mein Studium" and then "Studienplaner mit Modulplan"
- After selecting your course of study (Bachelor of Science or Master of Science) the next window will look like this:
- This tree structure shows all courses that can be selected for exam registration. It is divided into basic/mandatory courses (Grundlagenbereich) followed by specialised courses (Spezialisierungsbereiche).
- By clicking on the "+"-symbol next to the course name another branch will open (Please do not click on the course name, this will only open a course overview).
- As you can see in the picture above there is the action "anmelden" (register) available.
- If you're registering for exams the first time (of each login session), this window will be opened after clicking on "anmelden":
- It contains some information e.g. that you should save your registrations as a pdf-file (How to do that will be explained in the end). Just tick the box next to "Ich akzeptiere" (I accept) and proceed.
- Now you have to select "anmelden" again and this window will open:
- If you get this notification, you're successfully registered :)
- For further registrations go back to the overview ("Zurück zur Übersicht")
- Please be aware of two important things:
1. For some courses you can choose in which specialised course section you want the course to be credited (that option is represented by the green and red arrow). Therefor go to the specialised section and choose the course there. (E.g. "Advanced Mathematics" can be credited in 4 different sections: "Accounting, Finance and Taxation", "Business Analytics", "Empirical Economics" and "International and Development Economics").
2. For some courses you can choose between the ECTS (in general between 4 (60 minute exam) and 6 ECTS (90 minute exam)). Therefor register for the respective amount you want to be credited.
- Last but not least please save your registrations as a pdf file:
Go to "Mein Studium" again and then to "Meine Belegungen und Prüfungsanmeldungen". Here you can check your registrations again and also undo the registrations by clicking on "abmelden". At the top of the listing you'll find "PDF-Dokument erstellen" (create a pdf-file). Save this file or print it out, if any issues occur.
