Elective courses are often offered with 4 or 6 ECTS credits. What does this ECTS number depend on and who decides how many ECTS are awarded?
4 ECTS are typically awarded for participation in the lecture with a corresponding examination on the lecture;
6 ECTS are typically awarded if the student also attends the accompanying tutorial and takes the correspondingly more extensive examination. If this elective option exists, the ECTS number is chosen by the student when registering for the examination. The required performances and possible ECTS points are announced at the beginning of the semester (course catalog, module handbook or first lecture).
