Germans, German nationals and EU/EEA citizens: 90% of the study places are awarded in a selection procedure and 10% after a waiting period.
Non-EU/EEA citizens (without German Abitur) do not participate in this selection procedure, the allocation is made within a quota of 8% of the study places.

Overview of the study program:

The polyvalent German-language two-major Bachelor's degree program with a teaching profession option was introduced in the winter semester 2015/2016 and offers a teaching profession option in the elective area.
The three-year bachelor's program, together with a subsequent two-year Master of Education (expected start WS 2019/20) and the subsequent traineeship, opens the door to the teaching profession of Gymnasium.

Structure and composition of the study program

The Bachelor's program comprises 180 ECTS points (standard period of study 6 semesters) and consists of the following four parts:

  • Economics (75 points)
  • Other major subject (75 points)
  • Elective modules (20 points)
  • Bachelor thesis in one of the two main subjects (10 points)

Subject area (75 ECTS)

In the subject of economics, modules with a total of 75 ECTS credits must be completed. The subject area is divided into a basic area and an in-depth area. The following modules must be completed in the basic area:

Fundamental area 

  • Methodical basics
  • Fundamentals of economics
  • Fundamentals of political science.

Area of specialization

The specialization area is divided into specialization area I: Economic Policy and Business Ethics and specialization area II: BWL and Law.


Other major (75 ECTS)

Currently, one of the following subjects may be chosen as a second major:
Bachelor of Arts subjects: English, French, German, History, Greek, Italian, Catholic Theology, Latin, Philosophy/Ethics, Political Science, Russian, Spanish.

Subjects of the Bachelor of Science: Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Physical Education.
The Bachelor's thesis may be written in one of the two chosen majors. The designation of the degree is determined by which of the two subjects the bachelor's thesis is written in.


Option area (20 ECTS)

A maximum of 20 ECTS credits can be earned in the option area.

Option "Lehramt Gymnasien":

If the polyvalent two-subject bachelor's degree program is studied as a teaching-related bachelor's degree program, subject didactics modules in each subject and two educational science modules ("Introduction to Educational Sciences" and the orientation internship with preparation and follow-up) must be completed.

This option serves as preparation for the one subsequent Master of Education and the teaching profession.

Note: The study of the teaching subject Economics does not qualify for entry into the preparatory service and later service at vocational schools.

Option Individual Focus:
If the bachelor's degree program is not related to teaching, at least 8 ECTS must be acquired in the area of professionally oriented competencies in the option area. A further 12 ECTS credits are to be acquired either in the area of professionally oriented competencies or in the area of subject-specific science and interdisciplinarity.

Admission and Application:

  • Admission of first-year students to the polyvalent two-major Bachelor's program in Economics is only possible for the winter semester. The application for admission including all required documents must be received by the University of Freiburg by the preceding July 15 (cut-off deadline). The application takes place centrally via the university: Online application
  • After successful application (see above), the enrollment for the subject Economics for foreign students is possible until about one week before the start of lectures in October.
  • Entry into the first semester of the subject is only possible for the winter semester.

  • Higher semesters can also be entered in the summer semester on the basis of recognized achievements from previous studies. You can find more information about recognitions here.
