Before your stay

1. Forms of the University of Freiburg:

  • After successfully being nominated for an exchange, you will be informed by e-mail and will be asked to notify us within the stated deadline, if you accept your exchange.
  • Subsequently, the EU-office will send you an e-mail with a link and a manual for online registration via Mobility Online for the ERASMUS program. This will likely occur in May.
  • After completing the registration form, you can print it out or create a pdf-file. Please have this document signed by the departmental coordinator (Dr. Minter) and upload it again via Mobility Online.
  • The deadline for online registration and the submission of the signed registration form will be communicated to you by the Erasmus team in the International Office of Uni Freiburg.
  • Students with the target universities in Lucerne, Warsaw and Helsinki/Vasa should submit the forms as soon as possible, as earlier nomination deadlines apply there!
  • Also important: If you change your mind and you want to cancel the exchange, please get in touch with us as soon as possible, so that your place can be offered to another applicant.

2. Enrollment at the partner university

  • In order to be able to study at the partner university, you must enroll or register there. Most universities have a simplified registration/enrollment procedure for Erasmus students. Usually, you will find the necessary information on the homepage and e-mail of the respective partner university. Registration deadlines vary from the end of March to the end of July. It is your responsibility to comply with the applicable deadline! If the registration form requires a signature from the University of Freiburg, you can obtain it from the departmental coordinator Mr. Minter.

3. Language preparation

  • You should prepare your language for your stay abroad, especially if it is a non-English speaking/teaching university. You have the possibility to attend language courses at the Language Institute of the University (SLI) during the summer semester (or winter semester) and also during the semester breaks. Please register as early as possible. >> SLI University of Freiburg
  • The partner universities usually offer language courses for exchange students as well - either during the semester or as an intensive course before the beginning of the semester. Please consult the websites of the respective university

4. Learning Agreement

  • The Learning Agreement (LA) is an agreement in which you record the courses you would like to attend at the target university (based on the latest courses). Many partner universities already expect a Learning Agreement along with the enrollment from you, while others do not. However, all course information for the coming winter semester may not always be available then. In this case, you must make your first course selection based on the past course catalogue.
  • In most cases, the course selection can be changed without problems on site ("Changes during mobility"). You should have a total of about 30 ECTS for the courses (set by the Erasmus program), but you are not restricted to economic courses either by our faculty, or by the Erasmus program.
  • You compile your LA via Mobility Online. Once it has been approved online by Mr. Minter, you can save it as a pdf-file and have it signed by all parties. Once you have all necessary signatures, please upload the document again via Mobility Online (by June 30, at the latest, if there is no previous deadline by the partner university).

5. Approval of your credits

  • The approval of your credits abroad always takes place after your stay abroad. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that everything will be allowable. In the past, however, the approval turned out to be uncomplicated. If you would like to have information beforehand, please send an e-mail to Mr. Minter. For more information of the procedure and the relevant documents for crediting, please click on After your stay.

6. Leave of absence

  • For the semesters in which you are studying abroad, you can have a leave of absence. The signed online registration document is sufficient as proof for the Studierendensekretariat. You can not participate exams at the University of Freiburg during your semester off. (Retake exams are always assigned to the semester in which they actually take place. >> Information and download of the form

7. Further helpful information

  • Experience reports: Many interesting and important information about the studies at the respective partner university can be obtained through the experiences of former exchange students. Some of these reports are available here by clicking on the respective university. Further, they can be viewed in paper form in the EU office.
  • Networking: If you want to contact former, current or future outgoings, which may help you with specific questions about studying and living abroad, we provide the respective details on request.
